Regarding The Gift Of Tongues

I'm so beyond frustrated in regard to tongues and the attitude behind them. Fellow Christians, I ask you to be kind and empathetic to anyone who tells you they don't have this gift, because honestly, in my experience, (please pardon my language here) some of you are downright condescending a-holes and exceedingly cruel.
I would LOVE to speak in tongues. I would LOVE to have a prayer language with which I can speak to God. How special it would be! I have asked for the gift several times, but that request has not been granted.
It feels like the entire Christian world looks down on you if you don't have the gift of tongues. And if you express that you don't have tongues and that not everybody has the gift of tongues, then you're told that you're lacking in your faith and you're quenching the Spirit of God, among many other things.
I had another one of these interactions today that started last night. The other person has essentially told me several times that I'm quenching the Spirit, that I'm not giving God glory, that I'm not seeking His righteousness, that I'm not glad and rejoicing in Him or in my salvation, that I omit what is first and instead seek myself, and other such things. I give thanks to God and I give Him the glory that He gave me a very strong gift of faith or I wouldn't be able to bear it. And to add further insult to injury, when I told them they don't know me or what's in my heart, and that only Jesus does, they told me my response is a child's response. Interactions like this have almost done me serious harm in my walk with Christ in the past. The only reason that they haven't is because I am grounded in Him.
Paul went into spiritual gifts in pretty good detail in 1 Corinthians 12 and 1 Corinthians 14. Because it would be so very long, I gave web links for each particular passage. As I read these passages, the understanding I'm receiving is that not everyone receives the same gifts, which also includes tongues.
