“We all hate it when people put words in our mouths…
Don’t you think God feels the same way?”
Oh let me address the problems I have with this!
I very recently found out that the King James Version (KJV) of the bible has parts in the text that were not found in the original manuscripts, but found in later manuscripts. That is why, for example, in the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6 includes the words “for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen” in the KJV but not in other versions of the bible.
Should “for thine is the kingdom...” be included in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:13)?
It is also my understanding, that King James had the bible rewritten because he wanted to divorce his wife and the catholic church would not permit him to do this, and that was the start of protestantism. If I am incorrect then I certainly apologize.
I worry that people are making the KJV into a type of idol.
I also worry that people would limit peoples’ ability to understand scripture. Let’s be frank: old English (which is used in the KJV) can be very difficult to understand based on the word usage, the syntax, and the grammar used.
While I prefer the KJV, I have found it to be very helpful to compare multiple translations against each other. In doing this, my understanding of scripture has been greatly enhanced. For example, using the KJV alone, I would have never understood that worshipping God is so much more than just singing to Him or about Him; rather worship is how we serve Him through obedience, works, prayer, and the way we live our lives and conduct ourselves, over and above singing.
The New American Standard Bible (NASB) was also translated directly from the original manuscripts itself, and is a very solid translation; often much easier to understand than old English. And it lines up well against KJV from what I am observing in my study.
I end by posing this question: what does it matter which version a person reads as long as they come to the correct understanding of scripture?
May God bless you abundantly.
***update***
So apparently much of the KJV was based off of the version Henry VIII commissioned.
