An Important Lesson On Forgiveness From Jesus

In Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus tells an important story with a lesson about forgiveness:

A sevant owed a king 10,000 talents, but did not have the money to pay the debt, so the king ordered the servant, his wife, children, and everything he had to be sold in order to pay his debt. The servant begged the king to be patient with him, saying he will repay all that he owes him, causing the king to have compassion and forgive the man of his debt.

Having been set free, the servant found one of his fellowservants who owed him a hundred pence, and demanded to be paid back in full. The fellowservant likewise could not pay the debt, and begged for the first servant to be patient with him, also promising to repay all that was owed. Instead of showing the same compassion that was shown to him, the servant had his fellowservant cast into prison until the debt was re-payed.

When the king heard of how the servant treated his fellowservant after having been forgiven of his own debt owed to the king, the king became angry, and also had him imprisoned until he could repay the 10,000 talents that were originally owed to him.

Jesus ends the parable by saying “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not everyone his brother their trespasses.”

It is SO important to forgive others when they have done wrong by you. If you hold a grudge, then God will hold a grudge against you.
