Why Do You Believe What You Believe?

“The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

[Commencement Address at Yale University, June 11 1962]”

― John F. Kennedy

My pastor referenced this quote during his sermon yesterday, April 7th, 2024.

John F. Kennedy is brilliant with this statement, made almost 62 years ago. I see it more and more evidently apparent that this mindset is fully in effect with every passing day, month, and year.

There was a time when we used to think critically. Now we let people tell us what to think, who to trust, and what is the truth. We are so numb, so mindless, so self-centered and absorbed in our own lives.

Around 67 AD, Paul wrote:

2 Timothy 3:1-7 NASB

1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these. 6 For among them are those who slip into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

And Paul also wrote:

2 Timothy 3:4-3 NASB

3 For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

THAT my friends, is PERFECTLY FULFILLED PROPHECY that was written around 1,957 years ago. Perfectly fulfilled because it perfectly describes our society today.

Yet despite this, and all the other fulfilled prophecies of the bible, people believe in God in fewer and fewer numbers each year. And the number of those who profess to believe that hold to a biblical worldview that encompasses ALL of God's word become fewer and fewer each year as well. Paul wrote that this would happen as well.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NASB

1 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit, or a message, or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 No one is to deceive you in any way! For it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. 5 Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know what restrains him now, so that he will be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is removed. 8 Then that lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will eliminate with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; 9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not accept the love of the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, 12 in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

So as this world continues to fall away from faith in Jesus Christ, and in the Father, YHWH, and we careen at a break neck speed into the beginning of the tribulation and the reign of the antichrist, I ask you, why do you believe what you believe? What is the evidence or the experience that supports it? When was the last time you questioned it (or anything anyone tells you really)?

Food for thought.

Jesus Christ loves you. The Father sent Him to be murdered for our sins so that we can be reconciled to Him and forgiven, and to live with Him for eternity in heaven. There is nothing you can do to make it to heaven on your own; it is only by the grace of God for the atoning blood of Jesus Christ that was shed as the payment for your sins, and faith that He died for them, was buried, and was resurrected on the 3rd day. Without Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you cannot enter heaven.

John 14:6 NASB

6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me."

Romans 10:9-10 NASB

9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

Romans 10:13 NASB

13 for 'EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."
