There Is No One That Is Good
God tells us that none of us are good.
Seriously.
It's repeated over and over in the bible. In the book of Romans, Paul grabbed several sources to illustrate the point.
Romans 3:9-18 KJV
9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
That section my friends, comes from Psalm 14:1-3, Psalm 53:1-3, Ecclesiastes. 7:20, Psalm 5:9, Psalm 140:3, Psalm 10:7, Isaiah 59:7-8, and Psalm 36:1.
Jesus echoed it. It's document in the books of Matthew 19:16-17, Mark 10:17, and Luke 18:18-19. I'm just going to give you the one from Matthew.
Matthew 19:16-17 KJV
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Are you starting to get uncomfortable and scared? Good. You should be.
They only way you may be counted as righteous in God's eyes is to believe by faith that Jesus died on the cross for you to pay the price for your sin. Then you have to decide that you don't want to sin anymore, and you have to ask Jesus to forgive you for your sin. And this isn't like a quick thing you can say and just move on with your life. Jesus isn't a security blanket or a safety net. He has expectations of you.
To be effective, you have to also ask to receive the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is going to do things that are going to shake up your life. He's going to lead you to drop bad habits, break addictions, stop doing some or many of the things you're doing in your life. It's not going to be easy. You're going to lose relationships with friends, families, and significant others. Or those relationships may become very strained.
But what is the consequence of not accepting Jesus as your Savior?
Hell. We are all automatically born as sinners even though we haven't done anything yet. And the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23 KJV). What is that death? Hell. Forever separated from God. But that's only part of the verse.
Romans 6:23 KJV
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
When you stand before Jesus after this life ends, you are going to have to give an account of everything you said and did. And the "I'm a good person" argument isn't going to cut it. God made it very clear that the only way you can be saved from damnation is through Jesus.
So do you want to spend eternity separated from God with no hope of redemption, forever regretting the chances you had to be reconciled to God through Jesus' death on the cross, or do you want to be in heaven for eternity?
Is it better to live your best life now, or in the next life that will never end?
I think the answer is simple, but you have to choose. And waiting to make your choice is dangerous, because it's automatically counted as a no. You are never guaranteed your next breath. And Jesus is coming soon.
The choice is yours. What will you choose?
